Twenty Fresh Comics, an Auditer, and the Man with the Three First Names
Corey Martin Craig is putting the finishing touches on a comedy showcase taking place next Sunday, April 2, at the Ice House in Pasadena. The showcase is comprised of over twenty stand-up comics Corey’s been training for the past five weeks through his Cool Beans Comedy university. When I showed up to audit his class today, I was blown away. They were doing a run through of next week’s showcase, and all the class members did their five minute bits. Every one of them performed like a pro. They were funny, not in a “I want them to be funny” way. The material was fantastic, the timing and delivery spot on. I was scared, thinking about the prospect of being one of them in an upcoming series of classes. If you’ve been following, you know that I recently made my stand-up debut, practically getting trampled to death by a herd of butterflies. It was rough. But fun. I woke up the next day with a whole lot of ideas I had to write down before I forgot them. There’s a system to doing this comedy stuff right. And when I asked how many of these students were beginners, at least fifteen hands went up. So Corey’s system works. He cranks out stand up stand up’s in a matter of weeks! I’m sure they worked their asses off to get here so quickly, but damn! Am I ready to plunge into this world? Are you ready? I have no idea what I’m about to get myself into. But I’ve been preparing for this moment for close to thirty years. I’ve got material that needs to be fleshed out and unleashed. No spoilers here, tempting as that might be. So…ready or not, here I come!
