Day to Night

John Preston is a Marine combat vet for whom the cost of war has hit home in so many ways. Two years ago, he put on a 22-pound backpack and left the bay area, walking 22 miles a day for 22 days, through blisters, sore legs, excruciating pain both physical and emotional, ending this particular journey in San Diego. His commitment to preventing veteran suicide, and keeping the memory alive of fallen comrades like SGT Charles Strong, is burnt into his soul. He battles his own demons on a daily basis, yet embraces the slog of life through creativity, passion, and devotion to his family and purpose.

Kathryn Barger, LA County Supervisor, hosts a Tribute to Veterans and Military Families on the Saturday before Memorial Day. Now in its 24th year, the event is a tribute to the living, a remembrance of those who died, and a celebration of the families who stand as unsung heroes behind these brave souls.

We give thanks every day for our warriors. We pray for the ones in harm’s way, and for their loved ones. We do small things to remind ourselves that there are giants among us willing to die for our freedom.
